The Healing Power of Hypnotherapy

During my first 10 years working as a psychotherapist, I had the privilege of listening to the life stories of thousands of clients. My clients experienced hardships that included domestic and community violence, personal and family substance abuse, learning disabilities, poverty, sexual abuse, co-dependent relationships, self-destructive behavior patterns, and societal oppression due to their race, gender, ethnicity, government, primary language, sexual orientation, and more.

The anger that I observed reached homicidal levels and the sadness reached suicidal levels. And despite any flaws in our nation's mental health system, I can humbly and first handedly state that mental health services have saved many, many lives. I have witnessed the powerful - though often prolonged - power of healing that good psychotherapy can nurture. But after 10 years working in the mental health field, I had provided thousands of psychotherapy sessions and attended plenty more of my own. I had also been a student of meditation, metaphysics, and various forms of non-denominational spirituality from a soul-evolutionary perspective for nearly 20 years. Through this integrative work, I became keenly aware that healing often requires more than just talking.

With a desire to sharpen my tools I pursued hypnotherapy training. When I enrolled in a hypnotherapy certification program, little did I know that my relationship with my work and my clients would change forever. My healing work would soon draw from a level of human strength that goes well beyond the psychological, but into a place that is commonly referred to among hypnotherapists as the superconscious - a portion of the psyche that contains a profound level of inner wisdom, strength, connection to divine power in the universe - a portion of the human energy system that is driven not only to survive, but to thrive!

What hypnosis is:

Hypnosis is a state of relaxation very similar to meditation. When you think about levels of relaxation, there is a continuum. On one extreme end is our fully alert (Beta) state of mind. In western culture, we are conditioned from a very early age to utilize this active, left brained side...think, analyze, multi-task, get things done quickly. This active state of mind is also where we experience stress! A little further along the continuum, our biorhythm slows down a bit and we start to relax (Alpha state). We regain a sense of perspective and our stress levels decrease (e.g. looking at the ocean, sitting quietly for a few minutes, taking a few deep breaths, dazing off a bit). Still further along the continuum, our brain waves slow even more (Theta). We begin to daydream or even experience a light state of sleep. Hypnosis begins in the alpha state and shifts into the theta state, however it occurs before we actually fall into a deep state of sleep (Delta). Contrary to popular myth, being hypnotized does not mean being put to sleep, nor does it involve a loss of control.

But how does relaxing help us heal through hypnosis?

1. In a state of hypnosis, people often access information & insight that they might not access when their minds are racing along in daily life. Those of you with experience in meditation know exactly what I mean. When you relax, the answers or inner guidance just comes to you and you can draw from that insight to move forward. For those of you who are not meditation-savvy, think about a stressful day that left you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or confused. After taking a walk in the park, giving yourself a few minutes of quiet time to yourself, or even getting a good night's sleep, you reached a new level of perspective or insight into your troubles. A resolution that you had not considered previously now seems clear. Hypnosis takes this experience to a new level! The inner guidance that we can access in a state of hypnosis can be invaluable in understanding and solving various issues and in developing an action plan. This benefit is particularly useful when we dialogue with the hypnotherapist during the session. The action plan is meaningful and useable because we generate it ourselves.

Accessing inner wisdom helps us heal, but that's only part of the process. Many hypnotherapists use only the power of suggestion and in my experience, such an approach is very limiting. Instead, an interactive healing process that works with the power of the superconscious mind is what leads to a greater level of healing.

2. In hypnosis, the superconscious mind can conjure up images, symbols, and stories that represent blocks, barriers, and emotional baggage that have been holding you back. The archetypes and images that are generated during hypnosis can be very dream-like. These images and stories are emotionally loaded and represent aspects of the subconscious mind that are ready to be resolved - waiting to be resolved - but may not be easily accessible through traditional talking therapy or our daily alert state. The reason is that talk therapy, despite all its merits, utilizes a Beta (intellectual) state of brainwave activity. As a result, we can get "stuck in our heads." We have all known people who understand the psychology and intricate dynamics of their lives quite well but they still don't change their behavior. This pattern is particularly common with addictive behaviors, trauma, anxiety, certain physical symptoms, motivation, and other emotionally loaded issues. Hypnotherapy can assist people to release and transform the symbolic images that are associated with these behavioral and emotional patterns.

The next step in hypnotherapy involves transforming these symbols into something positive and in alignment with one's goals. Essentially, we re-write our mental scripts, transforming them into something more positive - more desirable. Sometimes, energy work such as EFT, chakra clearing, or rhythmic breathing in hypnotherapy can further assist the process of healing and release. People who are visual tend to do really well with hypnotherapy, however other senses can be utilized for transformational healing too.

3. The power of suggestion: The new experience must be reinforced through affirmation in order for healing through hypnotherapy to stick. This step is most commonly associated with hypnosis but is often misunderstood - or even misused by well-intentioned hypnotherapists who are not trained in interactive hypnotherapy techniques. When people desire change, they are receptive to statements that support them in that process but the statements and affirmations must accurately reflect the client's goals, imagery, feelings, and history with the presenting problem. The more general the affirmations, the less effective they will be in helping reinforce the client's healing process...the more specific the affirmation is to the client, the more effectively the affirmations will work. In many cases, hypnotherapists who have additional training in counseling techniques will be better equipped to formulate affirmations that are fine-tuned to their clients' specific issues and goals. I draw heavily on my experience as a psychotherapist to sort out the core history of a problem, the holistic picture of the individual, and realistic goals that are broken down into manageable parts.

What Kinds of Issues Can Be Assisted With Hypnotherapy? Anxiety, Fear, Sadness, Habit Cessation, Emotional Clearing, Confidence, Stress, Gaining Clarity, Unleashing Creativity, Motivation, Certain Kinds of Trauma, Past Life Regression, Deepening Spirituality, Developing Intuitive Skills, Some Medical Conditions, and Much More.

How Much Hypnotherapy Does It Take?

Hypnotherapy is not psychotherapy. The work is very goal focused, can be intense, and often involves some rather rapid-fire healing and clearing. Having a clear understanding of the issue can be an important way of moving the process along. Some people are able to get really good results in one session, but that is not the norm. I find that many people are able to resolve a single issue in 4-6 sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart. The more complex the issues, the more sessions will be required.

Finding a Good Hypnotherapist & Making Good Use of Hypnotherapy:

· Be sure the hypnotherapist is Certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists. Because hypnotherapy is an alternative healing modality, anyone can call him/herself a hypnotist - even without proper training.

· Be sure you feel comfortable with the hypnotherapist: How does that person sound on the phone? Is his/her voice comforting? Does this person present as caring and knowledgeable?

· Is this person willing to discuss the basics of your issue before scheduling a session so you can each get a sense of whether it's the right match? I require a free 15-minute phone consult for all new prospective clients.

· Be cautious of anyone who guarantees specific results - or specific results in a designated number of sessions. The fact is that the human psyche varies greatly among individuals and an infinite number of variables influence the kind of results and length of time needed for hypnotherapy to be successful. Hypnotherapy works for many people, but not for everyone. Any ethical hypnotherapist will fully acknowledge that fact. Be cautious about pre-paying for a block of sessions before you've experienced at least one session with that hypnotherapist.

· Does the hypnotherapist have a suitable office? Although many hypnotherapists work out of their homes, the space should still be professional, quiet, and soothing.

· Keep in mind that Hypnotherapy is a professional service and fees should be reflective of relevant credentials and experience.

· What other credentials, background, or experience does the hypnotherapist have? Don't make assumptions about the educational credentials that a hypnotherapist has. A Ph.D. is a respectable degree, but it offers little in the way of emotional healing if this doctorate degree is in Botany or Economics and the hypnotherapist has no other experience with personal development, counseling, or helping others professionally.

· Collaborate with your hypnotherapist about what works and what doesn't.

· Listen to your hypnotherapy recordings regularly. Doing so is essential to making the work stick!

· Keep in mind that hypnotherapy is not magic. It is only one healing tool and should be treated as such.

· Use your best judgment.

Stop Eating Too Much With Self-Hypnosis Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/6075617

There is an overwhelming number of diets out there, all promising toned bodies and slimmer waist lines within weeks. The sad fact is, very few of them work. The reason for this is that no matter how much we want to look slimmer and feel better about ourselves, there is still that voice in our head telling us to have a snack. That voice is always there, telling us that we have to fulfill our urge to snack which will make us happy right now, not worrying about it until later. This is very similar to quitting smoking. In many cases, being overweight is simply a problem with our brains addiction to always wanting to eat. It is not because we are always hungry, but it makes us feel something, thereby satisfying our brain. This is the exact reason why self-hypnosis has recently become very popular and remains an effective way to lose those extra pounds.

Self-hypnosis creates a heightened awareness and suggestibility where we are able to influence our own behaviors and provide ourselves with what is called post-hypnotic suggestions. Using it, we can tell our inner child that the road to a happy life does not have to go through food. We make a decision to lose weight and stick with it.. To be able to use self-hypnosis effectively in losing weight we first of all have to state very clearly and positively what it is that we want and after that make a firm decision to accomplish it. The initial session should be devoted solely to actually making this decision and the challenges you are facing with carrying the extra weight. There should never be any doubt in your mind that you can do it.

It is also good to ponder upon why it is that you would like to shed some weight. Is it for reasons related to health or is it because you want to shape up for summer? The reason is always up to you, but always choose something that means something to you and speaks to your heart like, "I will lose weight because I want to be able to play soccer with my kids", " I will lose weight because I want to fit into my old clothes that I used to love." You have to try and decipher why you overeat, eat unhealthy foods or snack during the day. What does eating these things make you feel? What need is it filling for you emotionally? It might be an idea to try and find other things in your life to fulfill those emotional needs. For example, "I eat because I'm lonely." Get a dog. This will provide you with a companion and force you outside for exercise.

It should be noted that the self-hypnosis is not what will lose the weight for you. Self-hypnosis will not speed you metabolism up in some magical way. However, with self-hypnosis you will change the way you think about food and about eating. It will shut the mouth of the voice in your head telling you to eat because you are lonely or not going for a walk because it is too much effort. You will regain control of your sub-conscious which is seeking to always control you behavior.

When starting out with self-hypnosis to lose weight, imagine yourself making the right choices. Choosing vegetables instead of pizza. Choosing a walk instead of TV. Imagine yourself on that walk and try to imagine how you will feel once you have accomplished it. Focus on your goal, write them down by hand, put them somewhere you can see them everyday and repeat them to yourself daily. The bathroom mirror is a good place as it is the first thing you'll see in the morning and the last thing before going to bed.

These are some of the reasons why self-hypnosis is so successful at helping people lose weight. Being on a strict diet can be a struggle, but with self-hypnosis you can change the way you think and leave these struggles in the past.

Healing With Past Life Regression Hypnosis

Past life regression hypnosis is an intensely spiritual subject matter, and one that deserves serious consideration during your healing process.

With respect to all the folks who don't believe in past life regression, it is a wondrous healing modality.

If you are one of those folks on the fence right now, keep an open mind and read on.

If your body and mind are experiencing inexplicable pain and suffering, (especially if you are young), the soul has been ill for lifetimes. Past life intruding on present life. A type of "residue" you brought into this life that needs to be resolved and cleared away.

My own experiences with past life regression hypnosis have been intense and in all cases, the past life that surfaced during my hypnosis completely relieved the issue at hand in my present day life.

Oh sure....it's entertaining to have a "past life guru" tell you of your greatness in a past life. But! Everything you ever need to know is right inside your own mind....right now. All you need to do is access it.

Here is an excellent exercise (I just did the other day) to access the wealth of knowledge that is within your own mind right now.

Here is what you need: A glass of water, a writing journal (or some paper), a space inside or outside where you can have about 20 minutes of some peace and quiet.

Tips: I recommend doing this exercise ONLY if you are physically strong and healthy. You must be relaxed but alert.

Before doing any kind of spiritual exercise, I personally use a prayer of protection. Humbly ask the Almighty and the Heavens (or whatever you believe) for protection, assistance and guidance. I ask that any and all information revealed to me be for the purpose of resolving past issues so that I may achieve my highest good in this lifetime. Thank them....amen.

Let's begin...

Start with a breathing exercise. Deep breath in through the nose (focus on filling the lower portions of your lungs with rich oxygen) and blow out through the mouth. Force the air out until there is nothing left. Repeat about 5 times and allow your breath to become relaxed and rhythmic.

If you are lying down, place your hands at your sides. Do not cross your feet or hands (important) just relax your entire body. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing for a minute or two. Just gentle rhythmic breathing.

Begin your countdown from 10 back to 1. With each number, allow yourself to relax further and further. Feel yourself just sink into your bed/chair. Allow every muscle to relax from head to toe.

With your eyes closed, visualize yourself walking up a beautiful path to a gorgeous mansion. Observe the greenery and colorful landscaping along the path.

As you walk up to the door, you notice a plaque with your name on it. This is your house;). Walk up to the door, open it and visualize your "Dream Team" (this is what I call it). You dream team can be Angels of light, Spirit Guides, loved ones on the other side, whatever you believe and feel safest with.

Ask them to take you to the basement of the home. Allow them to guide you to the stairway you will need to walk down to go into the basement. You walk down first. Your "Dream Team" is behind you supporting you every step of the way.

Begin descending down the stairs until you reach the bottom of the stairs and have entered a long hallway.

In this hallway are many doors. Each door is unique in it's color, design, decoration, etc.

You need to enter the door you feel most drawn to. Which door captures your attention? When you are ready, enter the door.

NOTE: There may be doors you are reluctant to open. Do not enter those areas unless you are completely comfortable in doing so. ALSO! Never pre-judge the information that comes to you, Just go with it.

Once the door is open, observe where you are. Look around and be mindful of your surroundings. Begin mentally recording all the information: what you are wearing, your name, people around you, the time period, etc.

You should very quickly know who and where you are. If you do not, turn to your dream team and ask them. Take a mental note of their response.

Now begins the journey. Why is it you have returned to THIS life? What is it you need to resolve by returning to this life? Is there wisdom from this life you need to resolve a present day issue? Spend as much time as you need to experience what is going on.

When you "feel" you are complete, return to full consciousness. I usually turn back around and visualize walking back out the door, up the stairs and out the front door until I reach the path I originally walked in from. Before I open my eyes, I look down and visualize roots growing out of my feet, into the earth.

When you open your eyes, drink your water and write down all your thoughts and experiences. You may find as you start writing, more memories come up. Go with it!

You may be thinking "was that real"? I assure you it is. The memory of the lifetime that surfaces during your hypnosis is the lifetime that needs to be acknowledged and cleared. Or perhaps the information and wisdom from that lifetime will now resolve a present life issue for you. There are any number of possibilities.

Brace yourself! Sometimes it takes a bit of processing.....you may begin to "feel" things or think of things you have not thought of in a long time. More often than not it will have a direct connection with an issue in your present day life.

The most important thing is just let the memories flow. It may be difficult as it may stir up emotions and memories you have repressed. Do your best to stay comfortable and acknowledge these memories, do not resist them. It's your soul's way of "taking out the garbage".

Happy Healing to YOU!

Dazzling White Teeth Through Hypnotic Visualizations

In this article I will share an example of Hypnotic Visualizations and Affirmations that helped someone to achieve some of their goals. I had him list some of the most important goals they had and why these were important and how they would know they had reached them. We took some of these goals from their list and created a very simple yet powerful daily ritual for them to do to ensure they would achieve their goals.

One goal was to have dazzling white teeth and an amazing smile. Another goal was for him to improve his posture and overall appearance and discipline. So the first goal of whitening his teeth is more for the actual teeth to be whiter and the amazing smile is more about projecting that warm feeling that others can sense and feel.

He decided on the teeth whitening product he felt would work best for him and I had him use the product as directed and then smile in front of his mirror with his back to the wall. So every morning or night or both he would stand with his heels and back against the wall and face his mirror and smile. He would imagine looking at someone he really liked and send them that warm feeling through his smile. He would be looking at his own reflection and sending feelings and thoughts of acceptance and respect and comfort.

He would visualize his perfect posture and he could see himself standing tall against the wall and he got used to how this felt, both physically and how good it made him feel inside. He would smile and send the warmth of a real heart-felt smile with a slight glint in his eye and he would see his reflection while imagine someone he was meeting for the first time or meeting again because they wanted to see him again.

His analytical mind could see and agree that he was standing tall and straight as he said to himself "My posture is perfect!" "My teeth are dazzling white and I smile naturally and easily and people respond well to my smile and smile in return." His intellectual adult mind could see and agree that his teeth were becoming lighter and more dazzlingly white, while his emotional mind could feel these scenarios and imagine even better situations and hear the laughter and feel the connections between himself and others. All the while he was developing his mental and physical discipline (think Marines!)

With Hypnosis we also cut down his intake of colas and coffee and other tooth staining products. Within 20 days his teeth were already noticeably whiter and more importantly he was more comfortable with less than perfect teeth. Maxwell Maltz author of "Psycho-Cybernetics" was a Plastic Surgeon who noticed that even when people had their physically appearance improved through cosmetic surgery some of them still felt ugly or deformed or unattractive on the inside.

So I always make sure to work with the inside and outside-helping someone to improve their outer appearance is often the easier part than helping them feel more comfortable in their own skin and liking how they look. You can probably think of some very famous people who have had tons of surgeries and have all the money in the World and died tragically and unhappy. Instead, you can be happier about yourself and reach more and more goals by creating your own ritual from what you discovered here.

Computer Addiction and Hypnosis

When most of the people hear the word "hypnosis", they will automatically imagine a person waving a pocket clock in order to make another person to act like a chicken, dog or walk like's zombie or even do action against their will (kill someone, rubbing people).

But the reality is different; hypnosis is a mental state (according to "state theory") or imaginative role-enactment (according to "non-state theory"), in which the hypnotized person is not in a semi-sleep state but better he is hyper attentive and has absolute free will. This mental state is induced by a procedure known as a hypnotic induction (which is commonly composed of a long series of preliminary instructions and suggestions) or may be self-administered ("self-suggestion" or "autosuggestion"). Braid, the inventor of hypnotism (hypnotism derive from the term "neuro-hypnotism" - nervous sleep), described hypnotism as a state of physical relaxation accompanied and induced by mental concentration ("abstraction").

In 2005, a new definition of hypnosis, derived from academic psychology (Society for Psychological Hypnosis):

"Hypnosis typically involves an introduction to the procedure during which the subject is told that suggestions for imaginative experiences will be presented. [..]. A hypnotic procedure is used to encourage and evaluate responses to suggestions. When using hypnosis, one person (the subject) is guided by another (the hypnotist) to respond to suggestions for changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior."

According to Freud, the mind can be divided into two main parts:

* The conscious mind includes everything that we are aware of. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think, act and talk about rationally (when you extend your hand in order to retrieve something). A part of this includes our memory, which is not always part of consciousness but can be retrieved easily at any time and brought into our awareness (like a definition). Freud called this ordinary memory the preconscious.

* The unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that outside of our conscious awareness. Most of the contents of the unconscious are unacceptable or unpleasant, such as feelings of pain, anxiety, or conflict. According to Freud, the unconscious continues to influence our behavior and experience, even though we are unaware of these underlying influences (just like when you lock a door but later on you are not sure if you locked or not the door, because our unconscious mind told us to get the key and lock the door).

But what happens when we are hypnotized? When we are hypnotized, our conscious mind takes a step back and let our unconscious mind to take over. By that, the hypnotherapist has access and can suggest to our unconscious mind that we don't like to perform an action, even if when we are awake we love to perform that action (smoke a cigar, drink a cup of coffee, get drugs, etcetera). This procedure is safer more than any other treatment, because if we try to give up to something by taking pills or do other stuff those can lead to harmful effects over our body, but hypnosis only teach our brain to reject them (there is no physical action against our body). And since the changes are made over our unconscious mind, we will remember that we don't like to perform that action only when we try to perform that action.

Consequently hypnosis is a great therapeutic tool for getting rid of any kind of addiction.

As a fact, we all experienced hypnosis but we never thought of that, when we watch a movie, when we read a book, that is also a kind of hypnosis (self hypnosis).

Because of the fact that the subject is susceptible to suggestion and because the response to suggestion can lead to alteration in perception, emotions and behavior, hypnosis is used as treatment for many phobias, pain sufferance, addiction and many more.

Since AMA (American Medical Association) agreed that hypnosis can be use as an alternate treatment, more and more researches were made. Current research showed that hypnosis is the best treatment for addictions. For example, for a group of smoking addicts, different treatments were applied in order to quit smoking. Here are the results.

With no support only 3% manage to quit without a relapse. Using a substitute for nicotine only 22% did quit smoking. Same percent was able to quit but using medication, or behavioral modifications or single session hypnosis.

Using multiple strategies, 43% quit smoking and didn't have a relapse. But using multiple sessions of hypnosis 63% quit smoking.

This is only a kind of research conduct. Other research revealed that suggestions given in a hypnotic state, even once, can produce actions in human beings that are the same type of actions that would have resulted from more long-term conditioning and practice (research made by Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London)

When it comes to addiction, every person that has an addiction will act the same way (being drugs, alcohol, sex or game computers). It is proven that hypnosis can alter the way we feel about our addiction. In order to change our lives we have to change our beliefs (which are stored in our unconscious mind), and hypnosis is the best way to change those beliefs.

When we do something we enjoy, our brains start to release chemicals in our body.

That's why is very easy to become addicted to a substance (caffeine - from coffee, nicotine - from cigarette, pain killers, or worst, drugs), or an activity (work, watching TV, playing computer games). The term video-game addiction encompasses all genres of games, but it is often associated with MMOG's (Massively Multiplayer Online Games).

According to Dr. Brent Conrad: "Most people can play most games without becoming addicted, just as most adults can drink alcohol on occasion without becoming addicted or gamble from time to time without losing their life savings". Scientists are discovering with recent research that the genes which people inherit may include "addictive genes". Those that do get hooked end up with ruined lives.

Further Information

No matter how serious the addiction, hypnosis has been medically proven as a safe and extremely reliable way to deal even with computer gaming addiction. You can find more about how hypnosis is used in treating computer gaming addiction by visiting this site: http://www.escapewow.com.

Information on Self Hypnosis

Self Hypnosis has been used for many decade as a treatment for many problems and issues that people have on a daily basis. Its applications are really wide and can be helpful for areas such as the weight loss, the smoking, the self confidence, the public speaking fear and many others.

The first thing you need to understand about hypnosis is that it's not a process that is effective if you don't believe in it. I could spend all day trying to hypnotize you and to help you achieve some type of result you want, but if you don't trust me or the process it's not going to work.

Our habits and beliefs are stored in our unconscious mind and some of them are really in depth. Therefore, if we want to change some of them we can't do it by simply choosing or wanting it at a conscious level. Something must be changed in the subconscious, whether through affirmations, meditation or self hypnosis. If you don't understand this process, there is no 'new year's eve goal' that is going to be achieved.

Our willpower is the scarcest resource at our disposal. Moreover it get consumed pretty quickly by internal frictions and thoughts. It's no surprise then that people who choose to rely only on that is destined to fail. I used to do the same, so I out myself into that list for sure. It's when I discovered the powers of self hypnosis that the game changed.

So in order to self hypnotize yourself, the first step is to relax. And by that I don't mean simply sit down. You need to consciously let go of all the thoughts and problems, take a very deep breath and relax all muscles.

Once you are there, you need to repeat yourself some sentences, in form of affirmation that you have previously written down and memorized. In that relaxed state, the subconscious is more receptive and it will get all what you put into it. Of course there are some rules for the scripts to be. The most important one is that they need to be in the positive and in the present form.

Another thing many people overlook is the visualization process that can go along with the affirmations. If you visualize your outcome, while you repeat it to your subconscious mind, the chances of success increase dramatically.

It's crucial that while you do your self hypnosis sessions you feel also what it is that you want. You need to think as if you were already experiencing the desired outcome. It's not easy at first and requires practice. However, the more you do it the better you'll become at it.

Self hypnosis won't change things overnight. However, if done properly for few days and weeks can bring incredible results. You can get rid of bad habits such as smoking, binge eating, fingernail eating, fear of public speaking, shyness just to name a few.

So go ahead and learn more about this process. I bet that you see incredible results.
